POSH PAIN-FREE POSTURE
Apparently someone forgot that I was meant to continue growing further than my current 5 ft 3 stature, but when I finally accepted that I wasn’t going to be following in the footsteps of Christie Turlington and Cindy Crawford I decided to look at what made these beautiful women such icons.
Posture!!! Beautiful confident upright posture!
A word bandied around so much. Do people really know what constitutes good posture?
It wasn’t until I saw a mortifyingly hideous picture of my said posture at my brother’s sun-drenched elegant Madrid wedding that I took a gasp of horror and vowed "Never would I be caught like that again!" If I ever find that photographer - I will shoot him! However it had the desired effect.
All my headaches and back pain were down to that word again, POSTURE!
As I have been studying my two-year old nephew's growth I see he can achieve movements and sitting positions that the average adult can only dream of. He can hold a full squat as good as any Olympic weightlifter - core strength means nothing to him, he just has it - and all while sitting with his legs outstretched and an erect spine - all because he is not made to sit in a classroom hunched over a desk. His time will come, but what a shame. To a large extent most of us are given the gift of perfect form when we enter the world but somewhere along the line it all goes pear-shaped.
Patients come in to see me for the same reason that I started noticing my posture - that hideous photo!! Or just with a complaint of headaches, shoulder and back pain to mention but a few. But why and how can it be fixed.
We are all far more sedentary than our distant cavemen relations - no longer do we have to hunt for our food and carry it the ten miles back to our caves to watch it spin on a spit. Sainsbury’s do it all for us, and our shiny 4x4 takes us home to our comfy sofa where we sit and watch Eastenders. Many of us rarely take regular exercise and, if so, do we really know what we are doing?
As young children, teenagers and adults we develop movement patterns to accommodate our lives, sooner or later these negative movement patterns creep up on us and we seek help from the local Chiropractor or Physio.
We have to change those movement patterns, correct bad habits and make some mild changes in lifestyle.
Now, I accept I am never going to be sashaying down a fashion runway, but I can see what Christie Turlington has and I can model myself on that!! Who cares if I am carrying a few Kilos more, at least I now have good posture and I am not in pain!
