Hand Pain and Numbness Treatment Clinics in London W8, W1 and EC2
Hand pain and numbness is extremely common in office and city workers who sit for several hours every day in front of a computer and return home to spend more time in front their digital screens in the form of iPads, mobile phones, TVs and laptops. Many who complain of this chronic hand/wrist pain and numbness are misdiagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or as wrist sprains, when in actual fact the root cause is in the neck.
In fact the likeliest primary cause of wrist pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in office and city workers is pressure on the nerves in the neck and shoulder and not CTS. The nerves that exit between the neck vertebrae course down the arms and into the hands. Pressure on these nerve roots as they exit the spine is much more likely that than CTS (which is in fact rare). This pressure or compression of these nerves can be caused by a number of structures, including but not limited to: herniated or bulging discs, the first rib and the clavicle (in which case nerves can be trapped in-between these two bones) or beneath tight muscles. For example, such overly tight 'pecs' (pectoral muscles) are seen ubiquitously in the rounded hunched posture of City workers, who can progress to develop stiff and misaligned vertebrae, facet syndrome or disc/spinal degeneration.
In reality, it is far easier for us to treat referred arm pain than true CTS which is fortunately expertly treated by our brilliant physical therapists who work directly on the wrist joints, ligaments and muscles to mobilise the carpal tunnel between the radius, ulna and small wrist bones to release pressure on the median nerve. Compression of this nerve is the root cause of persistent pain, as well pins and needles in the palm of the hand.
Chiropractic and Osteopathy is extremely effective for neck, arm and hand pain especially in conjunction with physical therapy massage, stretching and exercise and the addition of our deep tissue laser greatly helps to accelerate healing.
