Benefits of Shoe inserts or Orthotics: a chiropractor's perspective
A million years ago, early humans ran barefoot on a variety of surfaces from bumpy terrain, grassland, rock, grainy sand and stony seabeds on our coastlines. Humans chased prey (or were chased by predators) and climbed trees - tasks that most modern 'Smartphone Homo sapiens' would be rubbish at. As most walking surfaces like roads and pavements are flat and because we wear shoes this means that the original capability of our feet is not being put to much use.
Shoes and flat surfaces let us walk with more comfort and a reduced risk of injury, but not without drawbacks. As a result about 80% of us suffer excessive pronation or flat feet - where our feet have adapted only to the flat lining of a shoe. The overweight suffer pronation even more dramatically.
Our custom-made orthotics help solve this problem by recreating the arch of the foot.
At Sayer Clinic in the City we provide a unique and inexpensive orthotic at around £50 which we heat-mould to the patients feet in our clinic. These orthotics can be further modified for example by adding heel-lifts or ball-of-foot domes which enable us to tackle a wide range of conditions, not just your low-back pain. Conditions which respond well include Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis (Policeman's Heel), knee osteoarthritis and even bunions. This is a fantastic addition to our practice.
